Preparing for the Future: CILA Launches Cyber & Technology Special Interest Group

On 10 February 2026, we were pleased to launch the CILA Cyber & Technology SIG at Marsh’s London office – marking an important step forward for the profession.

Cyber incidents and digital disruptions are an increasingly significant part of the modern claims landscape, demanding both technical expertise and a nuanced understanding of evolving threats. The purpose of the SIG is clear: to support professional excellence, influence best practice and help claims professionals stay ahead of emerging risks – contributing to improved outcomes for clients.

We were delighted to welcome speakers from across the market – including adjusters, insurers, forensic specialists and policyholders – reflecting the collaborative approach that will define the CILA Cyber & Technology SIG.

Caroline Nichols and James Marriott of Central England Co-operative Limited shared their experience following a ransomware attack affecting a key supplier in May 2025. Their session provided valuable insight from an operational perspective, reinforcing the real-world impact of cyber events and the vital role claims professionals play in supporting recovery.

The session on cyber incident response, led by David Stirling of Crawford & Company and Chris Ormond of Grant Thornton, explored how threat actors operate and the importance of a coordinated and well-managed response in the immediate aftermath of an incident, highlighting how clarity of roles and early decision-making can significantly influence the outcome.

The launch concluded with an insightful panel discussion on the future of cyber adjusting, chaired by CILA President Hugh Kennaway. As the panellists considered which emerging risks are likely to have the greatest impact, the theme of preparedness – not only in technical capability, but in mindset – dominated the discussion.

As SIG Chair Will Gow noted in his closing remarks, cyber and technology claims are not only evolving but expanding into new and increasingly complex areas. This is a specialism we cannot afford to overlook, and strengthening our collective expertise will be key to ensuring the profession remains equipped to lead in this space.

The launch marks the beginning of an active and forward-looking forum, and we look forward to building on this momentum. By engaging actively with the SIG and sharing their own insight, CILA members have the opportunity to help shape the profession from within.
