Chartered Month Member Stories: Achieving Excellence with Chartered Status
In this Chartered Month member interview, we speak to Tyler Pearson of Crawford & Company’s Major & Complex Loss Team. Tyler shares how achieving Chartered status has strengthened his professional reputation, supported career progression, and positioned him to take on leadership responsibilities within the profession. Tyler is also a member of CILA’s Future Focus committee.
Can you briefly describe your current role and how long you’ve worked in the profession?
I have been in the profession for approximately six years and currently sit within Crawford & Company’s Major & Complex Loss Team. My role involves managing complex investigations, coordinating multiple stakeholders and delivering equitable, evidence-based outcomes on some of the most demanding claims.
What motivated you to start your CILA qualifications?
I wanted to build a strong technical foundation early in my career and establish myself as a reputable Loss Adjuster. The qualification pathway offered a structured, respected route to deepen my knowledge and demonstrate my commitment to professional development. It aligned with my ambition to progress, and I saw it as the most credible way to accelerate my learning and benchmark myself against the profession’s highest standards.
What does being Chartered mean to you personally and professionally?
Achieving Chartered status represents the gold standard within our profession. Personally, it is a milestone that reflects considerable study, practical experience and dedication to doing things the right way. Professionally, it evidences my technical capabilities and reinforces my commitment to continuous development and upholding the highest standards. It is both an achievement and an ongoing responsibility.
How has Chartered status influenced your career progression or professional reputation?
Since becoming Chartered, I have noticed a clear shift in how my expertise is perceived. It has undoubtedly strengthened my credibility, given colleagues, clients and stakeholders greater confidence in my judgement and opened doors to opportunities that might not yet have presented themselves but for CILA’s qualifications.
Do you feel being Chartered sets you apart in the profession? If so, how?
Absolutely – as is well documented, our profession is facing a significant demographic shift. A large proportion of qualified Loss Adjusters are approaching retirement age and commentary consistently suggests that the pipeline of younger Adjusters is not keeping pace with the number of senior counterparts leaving the profession; consequently, our industry is grappling with the challenge of replacing that expertise as they retire. Against that backdrop, achieving Chartered status at a relatively early stage in my career has certainly helped to differentiate me in a positive way. It provides tangible evidence that I am equipped to uphold the professionalism traditionally associated with the profession and step into more advanced roles at a time when the industry needs it most.
How does Chartered status support trust and confidence with clients and stakeholders?
Clients and stakeholders alike want to be assured that their claim is managed by someone with the appropriate expertise. Chartered status is the gold standard in claims: it is a visible signal that you have the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience required to successfully manage complex situations and are committed to upholding the highest technical and ethical standards. That credibility naturally helps to foster trust and build confidence, especially when dealing with high-value or contentious claims.
Looking back, how important was completing each qualification stage in reaching Chartered status?
Each stage played a crucial role. The early exams gave me a solid technical grounding, while later assessments tested my ability to apply that knowledge to real-world scenarios. This structure ensured that I not only developed the technical competence but also the professional judgement needed to operate at a high level. Persevering through each stage and developing step by step made the journey more meaningful.
What would you say to someone considering starting (or continuing) their CILA journey?
I would say to absolutely go for it! The process is challenging – it requires considerable effort and determination, but the rewards in terms of knowledge, confidence and career progression are significant. Each stage of qualification enhances your ability, and the sense of achievement as you progress, and ultimately achieve Chartered status, is worth every hour invested.
Becoming Chartered is the ultimate milestone on the CILA pathway, building on each stage of qualification to ensure members have the knowledge, judgement, and confidence required to operate at the highest professional standard.
